A Canadian North Avions de Transport Regional ATR-42-300, registration C-GHCP performing flight 5T-823 from Iqaluit,NU to Pangnirtung,NU (Canada) with 11 passengers and 3 crew, was climbing through 15000 feet out of Iqaluit when the crew noticed the smell of smoke in the cockpit. Shortly afterwards the crew noticed smoke emanating from the left side maintenance control panel. The crew declared PAN PAN and returned to Iqaluit for a safe landing about 45 minutes after departure.
The Canadian TSB reported maintenance found an internal failure of a warning light on the left of the left hand maintenance control panel.
