A Viva Aerobus Airbus A320-200, registration XA-VAY performing flight VB-684 from Monterrey (Mexico) to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA), was climbing through about FL150 out of Monterrey’s runway 12 when the cabin crew noticed thick smoke and a burning odour in the cabin, that quickly covered the cabin and causing irritations and coughing amongst the passengers. The flight crew stopped the climb at FL200 and returned to Monterrey for a safe landing on runway 12 about one hour after departure.

Mexico’s AIB rated the occurrence an incident (no injuries) and opened an investigation.

The aircraft returned to service about 38 hours after landing.
